High-flying basketball stars from Cardiff Met are preparing to do battle in their sport’s national cup final.

Britain’s top women basketball teams compete for the Sportscover Women’s National Cup – and the university’s Archers squad are gearing up for this season’s showpiece.

It takes place on Sunday, January 29, at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, when their opponents will be the City of Sheffield Hatters. On the same bill is the men’s national final - BA London Leopards v Bristol Academy Flyers.

Archers coach Damian Jennings said: “If you want to win silverware you have to be in finals so we’re very excited about the opportunity this weekend.

“The players have worked extremely hard and, although we may be carrying a few injuries to key personnel, I have no doubt we’ll leave nothing on the court come the final whistle; we’ll give ourselves the best chance of achieving something very special.”

The Archers compete in the EBL Division One and play home games at Cardiff Met’s 350-seat Archers Arena. They top the 2011-12 EBL Division One, having won their opening 10 games, the latest coming on Sunday, January 22, away at Sevenoaks Suns.

Their next home game is in Cardiff against Durham Wildcats in the Cardiff Met Sports Hall on Saturday, February 11.Tip-off 6pm.

In this season’s cup run they have beaten the Worcester Wolves and Sevenoaks away plus the Manchester Mystics and Wellingborough Phoenix in South Wales.

Lucy Power, Director of Cardiff Met Academy of Basketball, said: “The Academy is committed to the development of basketball at all levels, from grass roots projects right through to international players.

“We all wish the Archers the very best for the national final.”
